Meet Olivia
Music has always been one of the largest parts of my life. I was born and raised in Illinois, where I started playing the violin at the age of 4 and the piano at 7. At 15, I moved to Arizona and began studying violin under Dr. Katherine McLin at Arizona State University, earning my Bachelor of Arts in Violin Performance in May 2025. While at ASU, I was an active solo performer and collaborative musician, frequently serving as concertmaster, assistant concertmaster, and principal second. In addition to holding concertmaster and principal roles at several summer music festivals, I’ve also played as a substitute musician with the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra since 2024.
However, even during the chaos of being a performing musician and student myself, my students were the bright spot of my college career. Teaching has always been my greatest passion, and I proudly maintained a private studio of 20+ violin students in the Phoenix area throughout my undergraduate degree.

Teaching Philosophy
In my studio, music lessons are about more than learning an instrument. While musical growth is central, studying music also teaches students discipline, curiosity, and confidence. My goal is to create an environment where students develop both as musicians and as people. I hope they take the skills gained through learning an instrument into all other areas of their life.

Technique
Because many of my students are younger or beginning violinists, much of my teaching focuses on building a strong technical foundation. Students who begin violin or piano with me have the opportunity to develop healthy habits from the start. For students who come with previous experience, I focus on helping them better understand their own technique and develop greater control and comfort with the instrument. Every student’s body is different, and effective technique must take into account factors such as hand size, arm length, and other physical tendencies. My goal is to help each student find an approach to playing that is efficient, comfortable, and sustainable.
As students grow, lessons gradually become more conversational. Early lessons often involve demonstration and clear guidance, but over time I encourage students to reflect on their playing, ask thoughtful questions, and begin making their own musical decisions. I also believe it is important for students to understand the historical and musical context of the pieces they study. Learning about composers, musical styles, and traditions helps students connect more deeply with the pieces they’re playing, the stories told by composers, and develop their own artistic voice.
A strong teacher-student relationship is the foundation of meaningful progress. I strive to create an atmosphere built on trust, respect, and encouragement. My role as a teacher is to be a student’s biggest supporter and a steady source of motivation. Students should feel safe asking questions, making mistakes, and challenging themselves. At the same time, I establish clear expectations so students make progress in a way that encourages them to keep learning.
Effective practice is essential for progress. Rather than emphasizing long hours, I encourage practice that is focused, intentional, and mentally engaged. Students are encouraged to break practice into manageable sections and take breaks so that both mind and body remain fresh. With younger students, I like to go over what we learn in each lesson with their parent at the end of the lesson. I encourage and welcome parental involvement during lessons and practice time!
Through learning an instrument, students will see first-hand how diligence, dedication, and consistent effort lead to real progress. One of the most rewarding parts of learning music is experiencing the moment when hard work begins to pay off. My hope is that students carry this understanding with them beyond the violin or piano, learning the value of perseverance and the satisfaction of working patiently toward something meaningful.
